Printed on 8 x 11 inch wafer paper. Just spread piping gel thinly over the sheet, let dry 5-6 hr. then cut out your butterflies with fine scissors. Make the body using icing and add the printed wings & antennae... as taught to me by Earlene Moore many years ago.

    IDEAS: Leaves below
  • From Aimee: Pearl Dusts worked GREAT for the butterflies.  I spread the piping gel on, let it dry and then brushed on Pearl Dust.
  • Don't miss the new Picture Frame ideas HERE!. You make the frame out of chocolate and use a picture in the edible frame...Oooohhh - add a butterfly! The picture is printed on a frosting sheet. You can get one pre-printed HERE. And what about a small wafer paper butterfly to set it all off!

You can attach to the under side of the butterfly. What size wire to use depends on how big/heavy your butterfly is. If its a heavy one then the lower guage wire's like an 18 will support it. If it smaller/lighter then a 24 guage to a 26 guage will work.
To attach it to the cake i would insert a straw into the cake. Then on top of this i would place a ball of fondant and/or gumpaste. Then i would slide the wire through the fondant/gumpaste into the straw.
You dont want the wire actually touching the cake so thats why i would sue a straw. Also the straw will help give support to the length of the wire. The ball of fondant/gumpaste will keep the wire from sliding around.
Someone also suggested that you could use petal dust HERE for shading them. Even luster dust HERE for sparkle! Brush on very carefully with luster dust/vodka mix. They had the shine and were dry enough to use in a few minutes.
OR just put the piping gel on then sprinkle some edible glitter on them and on the cake they go. If I'm not putting edible glitter HERE on them I don't put piping gel on them.

*** IDEA CAKE *** instructions by Cathy Fiebe w/rolled fondant kitty face on sheet cake w/royal icing flowers & butterflies!
From Kathy f - who started all this! HER FINISHED BUTTERFLY ON A CAKE - I found it works better if I spread a very thin layer of piping gel on them before cutting them out. They don't curl as much. I also make a slight fold in  them before I gel them. I sprinkle crushed edible glitter on while the gel is wet and let them dry overnight. Too dry and they get brittle when you cut them out. Cut them out with cuticle scissors, pipe a body, add wings, Marysol's marvelous rice stick antennae and you have a completely edible butterfly. I don't color the backs. The way I usually place them the backs don't show anyway. From my message board HERE.

She volunteered that she used 4 sheets of leaves. The mushrooms and acorns were made from marzipan, and I ended up not using the piping gel on the leaves, which made it even easier.
