| COMPUTER PROBLEMS AND THE ANSWERS |
I have an EMAIL account at http://cakedecorator.zzn.com.
(They don't offer a discussion group or have items to buy or anything,
so it's not
competition for Dolores. Please don't take
this post off, Dolores!) They just have email accounts and home websites.
Could someone try logging onto this website now? Anybody just try it.
....Did you get through?
I cannot get through. Everytime it says "Internet
Explorer cannot open the internet site http://cakedecorator.zzn.com. A
connection with the server
could not be established."
And when I go to my member page for my homepage
(which is only half done until I get my new camera: http://angie.cakedecorator.net
is my
homepage.) When I go to my "EDIT" page to
build my website and click the "mail" button, the computer won't do anything!
I wrote them from
the "HELP" button but if it's like other websites
they won't get back to me. Anyone else having this problem? Help!

It worked when I tried. Try rebooting and try
after that. Explorer is notorious for running your computer out of memory.
I didn't sign in or anything. I NEVER go into pages
I must sign in or give a name and password. Those are usually the places
that sell email
address they collect from this. I get enough
junk mail. Not very much because this is my rule.
You should sign up with a server ISP, that
does allow web sites. Almost do...even aol does LOL.

If I can't get this figured out, then I may
have to do that. I think my ISP does provide home web site service.
I didn't know that some web sites can do that
to you - stuff you with cookies! Had no idea! Thanks for your help.

Your ISP's web service...
Fri Oct 6 07:43:54 2000
...information is going to be available at the web site address of your ISP. Mine even provides counters etc too.
According to your email address, your provider's
web site add. is planetc.com
I went there and there is something about
'personal web services'
under SERVICES. I think, beyond that, you
may need to use a secure log in. oh oh...more 'cookies!

You're right......

By stuffing it full of cookies probably. A
lot of sites automatically put them in without your knowledge. Thank you
Dolores for not doing that. Your
site is one of the few who doesn't.

KathyF, After cleaning out your temp files
etc, do you defrag also? I have a list for my computer 'cleaning' but you
don't mention this. Just
wondering. I have it posted on my bulletin
board next to my computer and I printed yours too and it's up there now!
Thanks. Maryann

I have a maintenance program that's set to
defragment the files, I think once a week. I just delete the others when
I think about it. Usually on
Sunday when I update my anti-virus.

Cookies
Thu Oct 5 12:33:31 2000
Cookies are files placed in your computer by
web sites so they will recognize you when you come back. Some sites use
them to send junk email.
Temporary internet files are formed when you
visit web sites and usually kept stored in your computer for a certain
number of days. When your
computer gets too full of these files it slows
it down and can keep you from opening some web sites. I found this out
when I couldn't get to the
message board for a week one time. Talk about
torture! LOL
Following are instructions on how to delete
these files for those of you with Windows. All clicks are left click unless
specified right.
Click "Start", click "Find", click "Files or
Folders". The box "Find All Files" will come up. In the "Named" section
type cookies. Leave "Containing
Text" blank. In "Look In" select My Computer.
Click "Find Now".
When Cookies C:\WINDOWS appears click stop.
Double click on Cookies and the "Cookie" box will appear. While holding
the Control key,
hit the A key. This should highlight everything
blue. RIGHT click on a blue section and select Delete. "Confirm Multiple
Delete" or a similarly titled
box will appear. Click yes. An "Error Deleting
File" box will appear and tell you you cannot delete the index file:access
is denied. This is normal -
click OK. All that should remain in the "Cookies"
box is the Index file. Close the "Cookies" box and you should be back to
the "Find All Files"
box.
In the Find section, change "Cookies" to "Temporary
Internet Files" and click "Find Now". When you see Temporary Internet Files
show up
below, click stop. Double click on that and
the "Temporary Internet Files" box will appear. Control A to highlight
all files in blue. RIGHT click on
a blue area and select delete. A warning box
asking "are you sure.....? will appear, click yes. My computer deleted
all the files at once. Angie got
a warning file for each one and had to do
them one at a time. When you are done the "Temporary Internet Files" box
should be empty. Close all
boxes and programs and restart your computer.
I do this about once a week to keep our computer
cleaned out. How often you'll need to depends on your computer and internet
time. On my
computer I can see how well it's performing
by RIGHT clicking "My Computer" on the desktop, then clicking "Properties",
then "Performance".
System Resources should be above 80%. If not,
delete the cookies and temp files and restart your computer. It won't improve
your performance
% unless you restart.

UPDATE: It worked! Thanks Kathy! I rebooted...
Thu Oct 5 10:22:55 2000
...my computer after we hung up and I was able
to log onto the website! Thank you so much! I had no idea I was collecting
so many 'cookies'!
Thanks again!
I think that would be a great idea to put it
in the FAQ's so that others who collect 'cookies' will know how to get
rid of them. Also I'm sure I'll
need to repeat the process soon myself! If
you want to type it out just once, instead of sending it both to me and
to the board, that's fine. I know it
will be a lot of typing!
Thanks again! :)

Did you restart your computer after you were done?
It won't improve performance till you restart. Other than that, I don't
know what will help.
Does anyone else out there know?
I don't know if this will help or not, probably
not, but did you dump your recycle bin after deleting all the files?

From Dolores: Copy / Paste how-to
I'll try and explain copy/paste. I've been doing this a long time so
forgive me if I don't explain simply enough and just ask again.
If I wanted to save all messages in this thread:
1. open your word processor to a new page.
2. open the first message with the question.
3. Hold down your mouse button and drag your cursor over the
pster's name and subject.
4. Press these computer keys together: Cntrl & letter C
5. Go back to your word processor. You should see the icon at the bottom
of the screen...just click your mouse pointer on it.
6. Now on your new page in your word processor, press these computer
keys together: Cntrl & letter V
BINGO! Do you have the pasted message on? Then it worked.
For #4, you could do it this way: Go to your pull down menu and choose
'select all' (same as Cntrl C)
For #4, another way to 'select all' is to press your keys: Cntrl &
A
BUT these last 2 methods are going to also copy any reply topics below.
Thats okay. Just paste them on and delete that part if its easier.
I know it takes a few times of trying. But this works all over for anything
anywhere on your computer. Copy/paste is the best thing that ever happened
in Windows!
