Other shaped
cakes can be found on various pages according to which you want. A list
of LICENSED (cartoon) character pages can be found HERE.
Other such items will be listed on that page for these popular characters...(below
this list of other pages).
This type of pan comes with an insert
with the picture you see on my web site.
It tells you what tips, colors and
how much you need of each color of icing...on most of these insert papers.
-
The cakes you see are NOT iced first
with a knife.
-
You apply star icing decorations.
-
The pan is a mold and some parts will
look raised.
The sequence
for decorating any shaped novelty cake like that are like this:
1. ice any parts you see that
are smooth using a spatula. Often a small
angled spatula works best. Do the eyes smooth as best you can then
pat cornstarch on with your finger to smooth the icing down. Do tongue,
buttons etc the same way.
2. Outline in the dark color,
usually black. I recommend using tip #5 for this though the instructions
usually say to use tip #4 (tips have numbers on them). The reason I use
tip #5 is that you'll sometimes cover up those lines is the lines are too
small around. Tip #5 works better.
3. Use icing in colors shown
in the bag now. Pipe star shapes for the rough texture. Usually a tip $16,
17 or 18 are used for the texture. To make these 'stars' fill the bag with
icing...not too full! Place the tip slightly above the surface, not touching
the cake, and press until it forms a star shape. Stop your pressure entirely
before lifting away.
OTHER TIPS:
-
For the black on the 'eye' if cornstarch
is used it will leave the white powder on. So you could instead use water....wet
the tip of your finger...not too much or it will run. And gently touch
the icing to smooth it.
For smoothing
larger sections I have a couple of other tips:
1. For the sides, use the
cake
icer tip. You'll need a large
bag (16"). Place the tip down in the bag, fill with icing. Not so much
you can't handle it comfortably. Hold the bag on side and pipe the sides
smooth. Ypu may need to touch up with a spatula until you get the hang
of this. But it is easier and faster than a knife. If icing is sticking
up at the top, take your small angled spatula and smooth it over the top
of the cake to make it finished-looking.
2. For smooth parts on top:
Spread the icing on with a small angled spatula. Then use a smooth paper
towel. Lay the towel on the icing once it crusts and the towel won't stick...about
5-10 minutes after the icing is spread on, and rub in a circular motion,
lift the towel away.

For most Novelty shaped cakes you need
tips
#'s: 5, 16, 18, 21
-
Be sure to keep your paper pan insert
with the directions. Never throw that away!
-
These pans hold one cake mix or one
recipe of batter.
-
Icing:
You need one recipe that contains 2 lbs of conf. sugar and shortening (flavor
and milk of course). Crisco doesn't taste as good but it is very very hard
for beginners to use butter since it melts and gets soupy right away when
you touch the bag with your warm hands.
