it would help a bit knowing your skill level.
there is/was (?) a candy mold of instruments you could make and place
on w/lots of flowers. fancy ruffled borders would add much. that is
unless she is more tomboy :)

or how about letting her teens wing their way into the past? make the
number 19 w/wings. wording could be something along the lines of 'your
teens just flew the coop' or 'flew away forever'. then add 'happy 20th

You could use cupcakes and frost them with flesh colored icing. Cherries work well on top of the cupcakes and chocolate sprinkles or colored coconut work for the lower half of the cake. You could even put a cherry under the sprinkles for an added surprise (if you know what i mean!! :-)

My daughter recently did a "time line" theme on a cake for a friend who
turned 40. It was one of the most clever and colorful cakes I have ever
seen. All around the edges of this large sheet cake, they had little
ornaments (baby in cradle for being born, soldier for when he was in the
service, things representing when he got married, had children, etc.)
and then they placed those all around the ledges of the cake with a
short typewritten note saying what they represented. In the middle of
the cake they had a tombstone with "40" and here lies my youth on it.
Depending upon how many people are involved and all the different
achievements, you might be able to do something like that.

oh, i think the juke box shapped pan placed on a dbl layer full sheet
would be great! it would give you about 125-150 servings. for the rest
make a 2nd dbl 1/2 or full sheet cake w/their logo and lots of gold
leaves & madallion (sp?). making 2 or more cakes would also allow more
people to view your work before it is cut up.
oh it goes w/o saying the jukebox is decorated to look like an antique

I just made the cake from Woman's Day a couple of days ago. One big
hint--don't try to balance the cake on a stack of graham crackers, like
they suggest. It sounded like a great idea to me, and that's what I
did, but the cake really leaned on me quite a bit. [I was making a
birthday cake for a school bus driver; I had to change it from "Marie's
Birthday Bus" to "Marie's Wild Ride!" LOL] Instead, I would cut out
cardboard the whole shape of the bottom of the bus, and stack the
sculptured cake on that. You could then either stack the cardboard base
on top of a couple of graham crackers to elevate it, or just cut out
some smaller pieces of cardboard for the base.

I also did all the decorations either with color flow or icing; I didn't
bother with the licorice and other candies that they used for the trim.

Good luck!

Or use a candy mold and decorate the cake as sky with clouds and add

Hi!

I know that Women's Day magazine had a doll cake some time in late June/
early July. I really liked the skirt on the cake because it was
composed of a small bundt pan and a small round layer. I don't remember
the exact measurements. Maybe an 8" round under the smaller bundt
- *not* the 11 cup size. The bundt cake made the skirt fuller and more
like a "hoop" skirt alla Scarlet O'Hara. Maybe you can look in your
local library to see if they carry Woman's Day. Check the late May
through the the June issues. Sorry, my sense of time isn't so great. It
shouldn't take too long to check through these issues. Hope this helps.

HI Dee,

You could make a doll cake using a Barbie instead of a doll pick. There
were directions for a cake something like this in a Family Circle or
Woman's Day magazine that had a section on Disney. This was a
Cinderella cake, but it used the 11 1/2 inch fashion doll like Barbie.
I believe they used a small bundt pan on top of an 8" round and put
Barbie's legs in the hole in the middle of the bundt pan.

I don't know who this is for, but most little girls love a bride doll
and especially Barbie as a bride. You could decorate the skirt and
bodice like a wedding dress and add a tulle veil to Barbie's hair and
have a really cute cake. Also, if you were selling this cake, you would
not be infringing on copy write since you purchased the Barbie Doll.

If it is a gift cake for a little girl who loves Barbie, she would then
have a brand new Barbie Doll to play with, once the cake is cut.

Hope this helps,
Renee

etc. A small plasic chanpaine glass could even be a bird bath( covered
and edged with icing, Blue gel for the water). I would love to do
something like this! ONE BIG HINT! Don't cover the center post to
look like the trees brown tunk until the cake is set up. The icing may
fall off the trunk.

A few other ideas:

With the airbrush:
1. While icing the cake take your metal spatula and on the diagonal draw
spatula thru the icing with a wiggle motion. Do several rows of this.
Then when spraying, spray from the back and straight down leaving the
tops of the wiggles white.
2. Spray the beach brown then add the sugar, etc. so if you miss a spot
it doesn't show.
3. Don't forget some green grass. Spray with green then add clumps of
green grass with tip 233.
4. Use the cake comb to wiggle a design then air brush blueish green.

Plastics & edibles to add: which we sell of course
1. Palm trees, two sizes
2. Hawaiian people
3. bush picks
4. sugar sea shells
5. sprinkle fish
6. candy rocks
7. sugar sea creatures
8. bathing suit girl in lounge chair
9. those cocktail umbrellas
10. sugar fish
11. candy molds for molding sea stuff out of fondant, sugar, chocolate,
etc.
12. sugar whales for out in the ocean
13. sugar beach set; pail, umbrella top, shovel, and ball
14. I use the fruit imperials to sprinkle along the beach for a little
color.

We also have a paw print sucker chocolate mold. If you want to make
treats or add it to the cake.

When the customer supplies a Barbie Doll for the doll cake we add a 10"

Not to be a hog. But to transfer with Wafer Paper there are many ways.
One is to use a non toxic ink pen and trace on the design. Wafer Paper
is see through. Draw on the smooth side. Cut it out or leave it round,
etc. Now you can color in with non toxic markers OR use the Cake
decorating pens only $5.99 for 5 pens OR star fill-in OR air brush OR
spread piping gel on the entire picture and paint with straight food
coloring. Its like water coloring painting. Very easy.

Now to get it on the cake, here too many ways. I like to ice the cake
let it crust then mist on water where picture will be. Add pictre and
quickly press smoothing on. It will dissolve slightly and be easier to
cut. OR spread piping gel where picture will be and lay on.

You can figure-pipe people laying on the beach, floating in the water on rings, etc. Add a few shells, crabs, etc. Check Dolores' online newsletter. You didn't say if it was the Disney Hercules or the Kevin Sorbo series. If it's the Disney one, Wilton offers a cake pan/plastic cake topper for that licensed character.
Otherwise, you might try Greek-oriented designs like the Greek key (a running border of squared-off spirals) or such things as lightning bolts, winged horses, winged sandels, togas & sandels, short swords & shields, and lots and lots of monsters!
You could use cookie cutters you might already have and add your own details - cut out reindeer, cut off the antlers, and add angel wings: viola, you've got a Pegasus. Make cookies and decorate anyway you see fit, or use those handy fruit roll-ups and put the cut-outs on a cake or individual cupcakes.
A bunch of gummy snakes sticking out of a decorated cupcake makes a neat-o hydra monster.
Or you could always have the kids involved in making their own treats - just keep it age-appropriate and be prepared for lots of mess!

that is somewhat heavy or dense. try to keep it perfectly smooth. any
wrinkles will show.

there is a wonderful little book put out by nick lodge that covers
other ideas.........'cake styling' w/a subtitle of 'presenting and
photographing your cakes'. *very helpful*!

I am looking for suggestions geared more for a beginner, entusiast!

The 1998 Wilton yearbook has a number of Hercules themed ideas in it
(see pages 10 and 11). The candy molds are cute and would be pretty
easy.

Also, I know there is a Hercules "edible image". If you don't have too
much cake decorating experience, that may be your best bet for the cake.
Dolores sells it in her online catalog; instructions on how to use
edible images are there on the edible image page.

Good luck!

Some of my Ideas.

1. Mom did a 3D car cake and took it outside and layed in in the gravel
for the picture.
2. Try a checkered table cloth for outdoor themes.
3. Mount a window shade to pull down in back. They come in colors too.
4. Streamers around the board for festive cakes, even horn blowers, etc.
5. We made a rainbow on cardboard once for a Wizard of Oz cake.
6. Joyce attached fabric to a cardboard for a background for a barbie
walk way. Like the stage.
7. Use wrapping paper on table under cake.
8. Use comb, brush, etc. around the cake for beautician.
9. For a wedding cake crumpled fabric/table cloth around bottom looks
wonderful. Make sure the table cloth has been ironed first!

Thats all for now, might think of something else.

I've done one of these too for my second cousins birthday. It was a sheet cake and I had Blue on the left hand side of the cake with his paw sticking up then a little to the right of that on the upper part of the cake I had a blue paw print (about 4" across) like Sue described with a tip 5 ( I think I may have used a tip 10 or 12 for the large part of the paw). I wrote his age on the pawprint in white. Then in the bottom-right side area of the cake I made Mr. Salt and Mrs. Pepper and a comic strip 'balloon' over thier heads and wrote in it "Happy Birthday Miles!" to make it look like they were saying it. It really turned out cute. I wish I had a scanner so I could e-mail you a picture ( Sometimes I feel like I'm not very good at describing things :o) ). For the picture of Blue, I used a picture I found in a magazine and stenciled it on the cake with cocoa powder. I think Dolores has directions for how to do this picture transfer method on her website somewhere. If you can't find it and would like to know how ( if you don't already) just e-mail me or post a message and I'll try to describe how. I found out about it on this message board way back when it first started and have been doing it ever since. Hope this helps!

if you need just a few servings then put it on a small round. for

Glad to hear we are being of help to you and the new generation of cake decorators! That's great since one of these days, we will be retiring or fall over in the icing!

There are some good Rugrats coloring books available. Probably it would be easiest for you to do the method you described with the wafer paper and the edible pen drawings. If you had a Kopykake machine you could put the page out of the coloring book in it and draw it right on the cake and fill it in with stars or outline with black and fill in with a #2 and then gently smooth each area down with a paper towel.

Whatever you do, your child is going to think his "MOM" is the greatest! They'll be your best advertisement especially when they start to school!

How about a beach theme?? this could be good for about any age group just make the "beach toys" age approperiate. you could do this on an 11x 15 sheet cake and have enough for the 20- 25 people you want to serve. vanilla wafers crushed up make a great tasting sand. i have seen people use brown sugar but i think it would ruin the icing under it.

Use the pooh candle and ice a green spot under it. Add 3 pieces of brown
fence in the back ground. Maybe some plastic or ice cream cone trees and
icing flowers.

One big idea we've done a hunderd times:
Use a long loaf cake cut into 4 blocks. Place 4 block cakes across from
each other like a + then add some straws for dowel support and stack an
8 inch round double layer. We then use the large pooh squeeze toy on
top. Add a few plastic trees around pooh and some sprinkle
flowers. Decorate the blocks as blocks, presants, etc.

Easy and quick!

hi; this isn't a whole lot different but i usually make it w/a tree on
one long side (left) this fills about 2" in from the edge; don't need
border on this part. use tip 16 or 18 to make long lines up from the
bottom. at the bottom of this tree make a few short, slightly curved
lines (roots); of course at the top make more and much longer curved
lines for branches.....also a few smaller branching off of those. a
couple of these branches go off the cake -- down the side. put lots
of green leaves and a few tiny drop flowers.
you can add some 'tufts' of grass and flowers to the ground area.
pooh is sitting under the tree. add a tiny butterfly or two. make
clouds in the sky (icing mounds) and maybe a couple of 'v's (birds
flying.)
hope that helps you. if you need i can get hubby to scan a pic tonight.

dollops of white frosting against a pale blue background first and it
made a really awesome 'sky' Then I mixed buttercup yellow with piping
gel and made 'honey' pouring out of a couple of icing drawn 'honeypots'
He really really loved it. "Everyone kept asking how I did the honey,
and no one wanted to cut the cake. Eventually the nephew just stuck his
finger in the cake, (smile) that initiated the cutting!
Hope some of this helps

We sell a construction vehicle cake kit which I use with a sceenery cake
using a petite doll cake for hills and brown sugar for dirt and don't
forget to fill the dump truck with edible rocks (candy pebbles).

This is an old idea; pan isn't sold but if anyone wants to part with it.
The old fashion car pan makes a good front end loader. This is a pan
with large tires and humps up to the cab. Then make the front of the car
the loader part with it digging up the dirt.

We have a NEW book in "Childrens Birthday Cakes Book" by the Australian
Women's Weekly $13.50 that has a cut up truck cake. They used a wedge of
cake to tip the back. Real cute decorated with cookie wheels, candy head
lights, and filled with wrapped candy.

Wilton makes a set of 4 candles that are construction vehicles. They're
on page 128 of the 1999 Wilton yearbook. There's a picture of a cake
using these candles on page 25. It uses the stand up mini bear pan
decorated like a little boy. Then they have brown sugar on top of the
cake to look like sand, I think. The boy is holding one of the vehicles
and the others are laying in the sand. I think the cake is supposed
to be a boy playing in his sandbox. It's pretty cute. Good luck on
your cake.

How about individual cupcakes decorated to look like baskets, and then you could attach a real helium balloon with ribbon above each one. They would look like miniature hot-air balloons! (The balloons will hover above the cupcakes, but they won't lift them - you need a really big balloon or balloons to do that.)

I need to make a 9X13 sheet cake iced in chocolate buttercream. This is
for a man turning 51. As long as I write Happy Birthday and his name,
the design was left up to me. But I do know the wife wants it to be all
buttercream, no plastic or edible images. I was delivering a cake to
the office she works at, when I took her order and I forgot to ask if
her husband has any hobbys or anything. I thought I could think up
something, but have come up empty. I told her this would cost $18 since
it was a one layer cake. (The cake I delivered that day had piped frogs
on a lilypad on a 12X18 cake. So I know she wants something, you know,
more than a plain cake.) Anyway, I need some ideas please. I have a
hard time with men's cakes since I try not to put flowers on theirs.

If you don't have an airbrush you could buy plastic trees and deer and make green icing for the cake for grass. make it look like an off-road construction area by either using choc.
icing on top or airbrushing parts of it brown. I put a road in, some
"dirt" clumps, trees and sometimes some water and then put little
hot-wheel type construction vehicles on the top in strategic places. I
usually make a hill of "dirt" with a cake mound covered with icing and
either trubinado sugar, crushed vanilla wafers or grapeuts cereal and
put a front-end loader or a backhoe near this. You can also use candy
rocks. Hope some of these ideas help you. Good luck

ok jen; kathy's suggestion is simular to one of the ideas i mentioned.
i think this lady really gave you lots of leaway and will be happy
w/most anything you come up with -- even extra words unless she was
very adament about it saying 'happy bd'.
i went thru my acd's and came up w/these: 4/98 pg 24 -- don't want
roses? use sunflowers. pg. 35 -yes, i'd consider this for a man :)
4/97 pg 15 - turtles w/somekind of saying about again slowly.
11-12/97: pg 38 w/o the cornicopia....maybe couple of pigs.
6/97: pg 50. round w/candles -- simular idea in yrbk '97 pg 28.
also in yrbk 97 pg 35. the #s could be done in colorflow if you don't
have molds to make them in.
yrbk 96 pg 26. again make colorflow letters instead of cookies if you
want.....or cremeflow right on cake! pg. 47 ; and pg. 63 'as ancient
as father time... h.b. ???. pg 80 top one; pg 81 'lookin' good for
50'.
acd 8/98 pg 25. this would really stand out nice on cho icing.
and lastly -- this one is reaching a bit :) acd jan/feb'96 pg 22

Since it is to be iced in chocolate, I'd make the decorations very colorful - such as yellow, orange, and maybe green. Maybe you could do the happy birthday in the center and pipe balloons with strings and then use that short flat tip and do confetti all over the top and sides of cake. This turns out good and is simple.

The open coupler would do just fine. Put different colors in a bowl,
stir just a few times then load up the bag. Hold the coupler a little
against the cake an squeeze and move right and left or in a spiral(it
would be a little harder). I'm sure you know how to potion them.

Sprinkle a little brown sugar for dirt. Make a cake bowl filled with
piping gel for the water. Or maybe a 'farmit'(sp?) made from a candy
mold??

Fondant would be fun if you wanted to use it. Color and roll. DONE!

Then maybe flowers in the corners and "good-bye and good luck, we'll miss you!"

I just made a butterfly cake for my daughter's party. I can send you a picture if you give me your e-mail address. I cut a butterfly shape out of a big flat cake and decorated it with lots of bright colors of frostings and bright candies. I used candy sticks for the antennas and did the body with all the leftover frostings in one bag and piped out stars. Not one of those beautiful fancy flower cakes, but it was pretty cool and my daughter and guests loved it!

I can't send a picture, but...

For a shape cake, use a round cake cut straight down the center and
reverse the sides. Curved sides together. Use icing covered toothpicks
for antenna and figure pipe a body in the center.

We have several books for sell with butterfly cakes. If you ever need
one, let me know.

But its not a 3D pan, it lays flat on the board.

Guess you could use a meat loaf sized cake with 6 inch cakes for wheels.
Sit the loaf on a board with styrofoam under neath. Straw for stove
pipe. Oreo cookies for the small wheels.

That's about all my ideas.

Hi Lisa,

No I haven't come up with the idea yet. I'm still racking my brain. As a last
ditch idea I might just do a bear and decorate it to look like a teddy bear
beanie baby.

Hopefully, someone will come up with something more inventive.

Let me know if you come up with anything. I need mine by 9/8/98.

Thanks,

Isn't that frustrating? The way I handle the character cakes is to have the customer check the party stores and toy stores to buy candles, figurines, small toys, etc, with the desired character. Then they show me what they have and I design a cake to go with them. That way, since you are selling only a generic cake, not the copyrighted figures, you're legal. Another bonus, the child has a keepsake or toy, too.

I did a good-bye cake for one of my husbands co-workers a few months ago that was very easy and everyone loved it. I figure piped several alligators all over the cake (top, climbing up the sides, along the bottom border...). On top of the cake, I wrote the names of the city he was leaving and the city he was moving to, with a dotted arrow connecting them. The main alligaor was piped along this line, going towards the new city. The caption read "See Ya Later, Alligator!". The directions for piping the alligators are in Roland Winbeckler's figure piping book and are very easy. You can also see my cake on my webpage at http://members.aol.com/swtcreatns/index.html

You may want to look at www.ty.com for pics of Beanie Babies.

Trace a favorite beanie on the cake? Maybe decorate a bear pan as
one? (Great deal of beanies are bears - I collect them). Some of the
more sought-after are solid colored bears with very simple designs
(hearts, shamrocks, roses) on their chests. Figure pipe one? Use an
animal pan you already have (most animals are represented in the beanie
world). Little gumpaste or fondant figures?

Okay, so my imagination's drained...

How about making one of those treasure chest cakes filled with beanie babies instead of candy or you could make a basket type cake filled with beanie babies. Maybe she can lend you the beanie babies and you could put them in plastic where they touch the icing. It would be really awesone if she's giving the beanie babies for favors and she lets you use those.

I have a customer who is planning a party and the theme will be centered
on Arthur the tv character kids seem to love. My problem is that since
Arthur is a copyright I cannot draw this on a birthday cake to sell. I
have decided to stay clean away from this practice but do not want to
lose out on a cake opportunity. I found out that one of the large
bakeries in town is doing all kinds of work like Elmo, Barbie, Batman,
Winnie the pooh cakes etc. etc. and put up displays at that. They
denied that there even was a copyright law . LOL. What a bummer!! If any
one out there can suggest something that could be just as good please
let me know . I am hoping that I will be able to speak to this potential
customer with a fresh new idea and win her away from mylarge
competitors.

Hi! I've been seeing your name a lot on this board and you have a lot
of great ideas. Very imaginative! I saw the Tabasco bottle cake, and
it is awesome! A little too time consuming though, as I have a wedding
cake and other sheet cakes to do that weekend. Another idea for that
would be to use the bowling pin shaped pan and decorate that to look
like a Tabasco bottle and put the #35 Tabasco car next to it. The
problem with that is that this driver is new to this car and the
collectible car that is available does not have Darrell Waltrip's name
on it. That would not be acceptable to my husband!! He is a DW
FANATIC!! Thanx for your ideas! ~Tina~

Millie: Happy Birthday! Mine was on the 26th, not 40 yet!!
I really like the salt and pepper shaker idea. That would be funny!
I also thought of the race car theme. I have the Nascar jell-o mold
and have molded candy with it before. I was thinking of molding a few
cars and putting the #40 on one, then placing them on an oval cake made
to look like a race track. Maybe put #20, #30, and #50 on the others,
but I need to come up with a really funny saying to put on the cake.
Something like "40's going fast", does that sound right? If you or any
one else has any input on this, please let me know. Thanx, ~Tina~

i like millie's suggestion about the car w/parts missing. sounds like

a couple of other totally different ideas; one ck out earlene moore's

Hi Tina,

First of all, I want to wish your husband a happy b-day, especially
because my b-day is the same day.

These are the ideas I came up with:

a salt & pepper shaker (should give everyone a big laugh)
the obvious of course would be a race car, but how about a race car with
a few missing parts (like the tires or something)maybe the parts can be
done seperatley and placed around the table to make it look like a
repair shop.

Hope this helps.

Good luck,

Millie

Hi! My name is Tina and I live in a small town in Illinois (about 50
miles east of St. Louis, MO). Although I am not new to cake decorating
(been doing it for 15 years), I am new to this site. Just stumbled
upon it this week and I think it is really great! A lot of good
information! My dilemma is this- My husband will be 40 on Sept. 7 and
I am trying to come up with a FUNNY idea for a cake. Not any of those
Grim Reaper-Tombstone-Vulture type cakes (I've done millions of those
it seems!) My husband has a really funny personality and he's a
perpetual "kid"! He's worked at an auto parts store for 20 years and
has been a manager for the last 10-11 years. He's on the pit crew of a
guy in our town that races a modified dirt track stock car. I'm
planning on having a surprise party for him at the race track on Sat.
Sept. 5. We are always kidding the pit crew and driver saying that we
are going to change their name to the "S & P Racing Team" (Salt &
Pepper) because they are all dark-haired with just a "little" salting
of gray! He's also a BIG Nascar fan and collector, especially for "ole
DW (Darrell Waltrip) who drives the #35 Tabasco car. Well...if anyone
has ANY suggestions and/or pictures that I could use, that would be
wonderful! Thanx for your time and I love this site! ~Tina~

How about filling the space with a big gold anchor? You could pipe on the frosting or use colored sugars or edible glitter. You could even cut the anchor out of a smaller cake and place on top for a 3-D effect. You could also do an American flag (decorated with candies or frosting) or a navy frosted cake with gold decor and little American flags sticking in it.
Maybe the Navy logo? Good luck.
